MACHINE GIRL (aka. One-Armed Machine Girl) is an over-the-top, campy, ultra-violent action film by Iguchi Noboru (Sukeban Boy) . The film is definitely NOT for everyone but will appeal to fans of Japanese cult films with a touch of dim comedy and unrealistic ultra-bloody violence made current by Ichi the Killer and even Tarantino’s resplendent “Extinguish Bill”. Folks will either applaud or be repulsed by this film’s execution, but it is a wickedly zigzag, darkly-toned entertainment that knows exactly what it’s going for. The film features celebrated Japanese bikini model Minase Yashiro in her first feature role, ex-AV star Asami and the fair Honoka as the Yakuza boss’ curved wife. Do I have your attention yet?

Ami (Minase Yashiro) is a tough but otherwise average high school girl, trying to lead a normal life with her younger brother. Her whole world comes crushing down when her brother and his friend are killed by ruthless bullies led by a Yakuza Boss’ son. When she goes to collect those responsible, she finds herself in over her head and minus her left arm. Barely surviving, Ami escapes and finds shelter from a marvelous mechanic and his wife Miki (Asami) who also happen to be the parents of her brother`s friend. They assume pity on Ami’s problem, helping her heal, training her and fitting her with a great machine gun where her left arm weak to be. She then teams up with the tough mother to view vengeance and together they unleash an unholy, non-stop, over the top extinguish fest against the equally creative machinery of their ruthless Ninja-Yakuza enemies.

The film is a wild blend of 70’s “pink violence” and 80’s super-violent splatter dismay that doesn’t choose itself seriously. The film is burly of bloody sequences and oddball odd humor that will undoubtedly garner a cult following. It was quite inventive of the filmmakers to rely on “old-school” style violence to conduct the visual blood and gore. Whether this decision was made because of budget constraints or some other factor, it made the film work; from an entertainment standpoint kind of design. The exaggerated gallons of blood complements the film’s action sequences; chainsaw-fu, machine gun-fu, swordplay and brassiere-fu are the film’s many unorthodox style of brutality. The film is an example of an adult-Tokusatsu (Kid’s TV expose) with the wild blend of action, camp, humor, sci-fi and even scare that plays like a stunt/Gore explain.

The film also has some campy ideas that will obtain you say; “What the heck” as the film makes fun of distinct anime-inspired names such as “Dapper Mourner Gang” and “Junior high Shuriken gang” seem attempts to somewhat tone down all the violence and brutality displayed. There are also bent touches of oddball humor with the “sushi fingers” and “tempura arm”. I’ve always wondered how Hellraiser’s “Pinhead” got that look; Miki and Ami were very obliged to point to how that depraved view can near about in a human being.

Sexy Minase Yashiro plays the lead, I’m a runt undecided as to how well her first starring performance is. She has the accurate school girl leer and she has a lot of charisma, but at times she looks a exiguous awkward with the action sequences. Asami plays Miki and she looks a exiguous young and definitely too wintry to be the mother of a teenager. Nude model Honoka adds a lot of eye-candy as the wife of Yakuza boss Kimura. The woman is zigzag in her occupy intention, she has that no-nonsense appeal further accentuated by Honoka’s sheer sexiness. She is seductively, yet creepily sharp as she displays her “Drill Brassiere” as an added campy show of villainy. The whirling and hurling flying razor inspiring “bucket” adds more to the film’s twistedly, campy appeal. Boss Kimura an intimidating villain although he isn’t an originally original conception.

With Ami’s Sailor Moon-inspired outfit, sentai/tokusatsu heroism, references to ninja and Yakuza elements, the film is definitely aimed at anime fan boys and those very initiated with Japanese cinema. The film’s enjoyment requires a very stout suspension of disbelief for its entirety. Pick two cups of “Shoot `Em Up”, three tablespoons of “Darkman” and even “Planet Anxiety” to two gallons of “Ichi The Killer” and straggle vigorously, then you will have an lawful belief unprejudiced how this film plays out. The film doesn’t retract itself seriously and if “Machine Girl” is any indication of the filmmakers capture on bent entertainment, then I’m sold to gawk “Tokyo Gore Police”.

Recommended for fans of J-cinema and Pink violence [3 ½ ++ Stars]

If arterial spray was a sexual fetish, “The Machine Girl” would be hardcore porn. If cinematic cheese were proper cheese, it could initiate it’s hold pizza parlor. If an ultraviolent anime came to life, it would be this film. I haven’t seen a expose like this since Riki-Oh. And at least that one had the restraint to refrain from drill-bra versus chainsaw duels and Power Ranger-esque ninja death squads. But build no mistake, this is one of the most hysterically superb times a gorehound can have with a single DVD.

Blood covers the camouflage, the heroines, the villains, the floor, and everything else in this film, sometimes to the point where it’s all you can peruse. Fingers are made into sushi, an arm is battered and deep-fried, a woman discovers her son’s head in her soup and then vomits as she is stabbed through the mouth from leisurely, her blood mixing with the extra-chunky puke to pour enticingly onto her son’s disembodied head in the bowl in front of her (OWNED!), and that’s before the giant machine-gun arm comes in! Have I given everything away? Not by a long shot. By this time you’re either in or out, but I’ll give you one more teaser. The Flying Guillotine: corniest martial-arts weapon EVER! Fancy it.

Get ready to laugh yourself sick…or maybe unprejudiced secure sick. Either procedure, this is one of the giddiest, most profanely violent, and cheesiest grindhouse films I’ve ever seen. It even comes complete with a pick up that could have near straight out of a 70’s exploitation flick. Deem my faith in Japanese cinema officially restored. This is what I want to peek when I remove up a movie with a DVD hide like this one’s: a Japanese schoolgirl with a ridiculous machine gun arm blow a hole in a guy and then stick the gun through the hole she honest shot in the guy to shoot a hole in another guy’s face. Is that too mighty to ask? Director Iguchi Noboru says “HELL NO!”. And God bless him for that.

Hailed by critics as one of the more valuable films of the 80s, “Colors” nonetheless is a fairly straightforward tragedy–there’s no other direction for the memoir to hold. Robert Duvall plays a old-fashioned police officer working L.A.’s mean streets; hothead Sean Penn joins his Break anti-gang unit, predictably testing the elder partner’s patience and reserve as he unprejudiced tries to hold the peace and develop it through that final year to retirement. Both actors bring more depth to their cliched roles than might be expected, playing off each other surprisingly well, even in moments where they are given minute more to do than react. But “Colors” offers no staunch answers to anything. The cops are presented mostly as well-armed zookeepers, while the gang members, blessed with youth and health but not great brains, hurry violently about, making the tale mostly a series of aimless confrontations. Art imitating life? Maybe. But careful audiences might feel they’ve been bamboozled, despite director Dennis Hopper’s rather lofty consume on it. With some scenes that are genuinely tragic and gripping–the shooting of an unarmed suspect and the movie’s final scene, to name two–and a romantic subplot that deserved more time–Maria Conchita Alonso seems to unbiased come by warmed up as a terrible girl flirting with the understanding of being good–”Colors” seems to have more going for it than it really does. Observe it mainly for the performances and the suggestion of complexity.

Dennis Hopper presented an unseen vision of Americana with EASY RIDER in 1969. It unsettled the masses. He did the same almost 20 years later with COLORS, a frightfully realistic explore at urban gang warfare in Los Angeles. Hopper has always been a talent, both in front and tedious the camera. COLORS could only be handled by the likes of an independent spirit like Hopper: It’s tough, brutal, no watered down studio gloss, no techno effects. Hopper is an actors director and Robert Duvall and Sean Penn are a perfect fit. The oft told cop yarn of the used and the novice gets an injection of novel life: the partners don’t like each other, they tolerate each other for the sake of survival. Duvall and Penn give strong expected performances and the myth rifles along free of expected cliches. Ice-T, in his rapper days (pre LAW & ORDER: SVU) is featured on the soundtrack.

This recital was originally broadcast on BBC-TV in 1989. Richter was 74 then but clearly had not lost any of his powers. He had, however, developed some idiosyncrasies that have a bearing on this recording. He was playing this recital, consisting of three Mozart sonatas and a selection from Chopin’s Op. 10 and 25 études, before a live audience but insisted on having no lighting on the stage except for a crook-neck lamp shone directly on the keyboard and on the scores from which he was playing. This came as news to the BBC-TV crew and they had to, at the last moment, obtain do with filming him on a darkened stage. Peaceful, after a few moments one does not mind this at all because the filming is primarily of his hands which, for me at least, was an education in itself.

Needless to say, Richter’s playing does not need any describing to those who are his fans, but for those who are novel to Richter’s playing I’ll offer brief descriptions. Before the intermission he plays three Mozart sonatas: No. 4 in E Flat Major, K.282; No. 16 in C Major, K.545; and No. 8 in A Minor, K.310. His Mozart is both pristine and romantic. That is to say that both his ability to bring out with utmost clarity the musical line and his penchant for highly personal rubati is very considerable in evidence. This makes for somewhat unique Mozart but it is convincing nonetheless. (I’m reminded of his recording of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier which has these same characteristics. And I confess that his WTC is my approved piano recording of that masterpiece.)

In the second half he plays twelve of Chopin’s Etudes (Op. 10 Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, 11 and 12; Op. 25 Nos 5, 6, 8 and 11 ‘The Revolutionary’) . His Chopin is masculine, dramatic and provocative. His playing of the C attractive minor étude (Op. 10, No. 4) is one of the most breathtaking I’ve ever heard. (Interestingly, there is a bonus of three tracks recorded in sad and white in 1969, twenty years earlier, where he also plays the C challenging minor and although it is noticeably faster than the 1989 performance, it is not quite as racy.) The ‘Revolutionary’ étude is also astonishing. The three bonus tracks include a wonderful performance of Rachmaninov’s Étude-Tableau Op. 39, No. 3 in F Piquant Minor that gorgeous makes one ogle with admiration.

I have given this DVD five stars even though visually some may be disappointed by the above-described limitations. But as I said, I found myself not even distinguished noticing it after the first few moments. Indeed, I found myself focusing far more on the music and Richter’s hands than I did on the setting.

An unqualified recommendation, then, for Richter’s legion of fans. Perhaps slightly less so for those newly coming to Richter’s artistry.

Cet enregistrement est absolument parfait dans tous les sens du terme. Malgré les réserves imposées par Richter qui ne s’attendait pas à être filmé à ce concert, il conserve l’une des plus émouvantes images d’un classicisme inspiré par un maître incomparable et qu’a priori on n’attend pas sur ce terrain. Mozart est redécouvert, mis à nu, exploré par celui qui fut l’un des plus grands pianistes de tous les temps. Je ne pense pas avoir entendu Richter lui-même se confier avec une telle perfection et tant de retenue à son instrument. Le son est extraordinaire et toutes les intentions deviennent nécessaires une fois réalisées.

Quant à Chopin, la comparaison offerte entre l’ancien et le nouvel enregistrement de l’étude en do# min de l’op.10 est effarante!

These videos truly allow HD to be all it can be.

Great series! Couldn’t have asked for crisper pictures and clearer sound! Ecstatic we went with the narration by Sir David Attenbourgh, hands down it great better.

I adore these cannonball movies. They distinct don’t do them like this anymore. Stunt man turned director Hal Needham (Smokey & The Bandit) has done unprejudiced as an wonderful job of casting this movie as he did with the first. Returning from the first CB movie is Burt Reynolds as J.J McClure and Dom DeLuise as Victor with the alter ego of Captain Chaos. Fair by reading who is cast in this movie is fantastic…

The movie is big, unprejudiced as vast as the first one. Some people will dismiss it because they don’t like to peruse a substantial cast of actors having fun. Or they’re too focused on their favourite actor who is not the star of this film. For me, it’s a classic, one of the best sequels ever made and a 4 star movie in my book.

However, where there is respectable praise at first comes the dreadful news. Unlike the first DVD for Cannonball race, this one has been totally ignored by Warner. There is nothing about this DVD that makes it stand out or get it worth replacing that venerable VHS copy. The quality is not really good; it has speckles in many places, noticeable ones. The sound is a bit shoddy now and then. There is no bonus features, no nothing: Fair the movie. Not even subtitles where included. There is nothing at all but a menu with a describe of the image on the mask, and 2 options to play the movie or remove a scene: Not even a trailer.

I fancy this movie, so I had to salvage it no matter what it had included with it. But for those of you who like a fine reason to win a DVD `cause of some nice bonus goodies, then this one will leave you sore. They could have at least got Hal to do a commentary track like the first one. And the deleted scene Hal talks about on the 1st movies commentary of Burt and Shirley’s heart warming special scene they wanted to do.

If you like the movie, you might be a bit disappointed in the shoddy VHS looking image quality, lack of bonus features, And in bulky veil only. Smooth, it’s at a satisfactory enough mark for it to not matter.

All comments about the film aside, whether you cherish it or detest it, I have to say this is the worst DVD I ever bought. No extras. The print of the movie is terrible, grainy. And it’s not even in widescreen. It’s an definite video transfer. Very disappointing.

On the other hand the movie is dire. But this is a kindly thing. Canonball Hurry 2, along with its predecessor has kitch value. I mean Daisy from the Dukes of Hazard in a spandex jumpsuit?! That’s worth the impress of admission alone.

I watched this demonstrate when it first came out in the slow 70s. Based very loosely on the memoirs of Col. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, USMC, Ret. (also titled Baa Baa Dusky Sheep), it tells a fictionalised and highly romanticised memoir of the exploits of the Marine Corps Fighter Squadron VMF-214 (aka The Dusky Sheep) . This ragtag squadron based in the Solomon islands created headlines when in a span of 12 weeks in behind 1943, it accounted for 197 enemy planes destroyed or damaged. That race ended with Boyington’s beget downing by the Japanese and his subsequent secret internment as a POW. Upon his release at the waste of the war, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his role as Commanding Officer of the Dim Sheep.

The TV series of course takes liberties with genuine history. Boyington and the Unlit Sheep were stationed at Espiritu Santo in the Unique Hebrides (present-day Vanuatu) . They also flew from Vella Lavella but there was no island called Vella La Cava or Epiritos Marcos. Although Boyington describes his men as misfits and the series happily plays this up, more balanced later accounts price that the men were more likely stragglers who had been separated from their units or got lost in the general confusion of the war and army bureaucracy. His Intelligence Officer is on picture noting that none of the men in the squadron were facing disciplinary action while they were with the unit. When the series aired with his name attached as Technical Advisor, surviving members of the Dismal Sheep recalled how they ribbed him about it and how he had to apologise. One of the veterans is quoted to have indignantly said, “We never went up drunk. The only thing upright about the expose was that we flew Corsairs.”

The exploits of the Shaded Sheep make about a third of his memoirs. Prior to that, before America’s entry into the war, Boyington had served with the Flying Tigers in China. He also served in Burma before Roosevelt declared war and he once again joined the Marines in the Pacific. Following his downing and pick by a Japanese submarine, he spent the remaining 20 months of the war as a POW. In the years after the war, he fought alcoholism, broken marriages, joblessness and ill-health. A line from his account sums it up poignantly. As he rode through the ticker-tape parade after receiving his Medal of Honor from President Truman, a well-wisher grabbed him by the arm and said, “Be Pleased it today, my boy, because they won’t give you a job cleaning up the streets tomorrow.” He published his memoirs in 1958. He returned to part-time flying after partially overcoming his alcoholism. He finally died of lung cancer in 1988 at the age of 75. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. A apt American hero. But as he himself wrote at the ruin of his book, “If this myth were to have a suitable, then I would say, ‘Just name a hero and I’ll explain he’s a bum.’”

NBC’s Baa Baa Dusky Sheep lasted a total of objective 2 seasons, the casualty of unpleasant ratings (it was up against Charlie’s Angels), and high cost. This was before the advent of cheap CGI effects. Those planes you examine onscreen are the valid deal, vintage F4U Corsairs effect through their paces.

In an inconvenience to milk as great money as possible from this re-release, NBC-Universal has slyly packaged the 2 seasons into what I fill will eventually be 3 premium priced boxed sets. Volume 1 contains fair half of the first season. Talk about greed. (For comparison, Universal has objective released a boxed region of the first 2 seasons of Quincy ME at the same stamp.) Universal has crammed all the episodes onto 2 double-sided DVDs. Some older DVD players have problems playing these double-sided Universal DVDs. On one player it unbiased spun uselessly registering a blank cover.

This first half-season consists of the first 10 episodes plus the one and a half hour pilot “Flying Misfits”. What has NBC-Universal done to explain the ravishing exorbitant impress? Well, one thing we can be thankful for is that they have provided a reasonably noble restoration of the new film prints. Portray quality is generally very worthy, natty, definite and attractive (though not as suitable as on the aforementioned Quincy ME) . There are detached occasional film nicks and dirt specks but generally the quality of the studio based footage is very high considering this was made in 1976. Archival and older stock footage has not been restored. They sight very grainy and grimy in comparison to the footage shot specifically for the series. But this is quite reasonable and even lends a sure authenticity to the episodes. Sound is a basic 2.0 mono but well-kept and distinct. The extras last a ample total of 6 minutes and consists of two interviews with the valid Pappy Boyington, one made in 1959 honest after the success of his memoirs, and the other in 1976 on the occasion of the premiere of Baa Baa Gloomy Sheep on NBC.

Bloopers: Stock footage of the corsairs is old-fashioned repeatedly over the entire span of the series. One result is that the pilots’ end net reflected in the meatballs painted below the cockpits change haphazardly between episodes and even within episodes. Some of the archive footage has been venerable rather indiscriminately, the most positive are the ones racy aircraft carriers. In the episode “Meatball Circus”, the Murky Sheep are supposed to land on the WW2 carrier Lexington. The footage however shows them approaching the fresh carrier USS Ranger (CV61) with a corpulent complement of jet fighters on deck. In at least 2 scenes we collect to notice helicopters taking off from the carrier when carriers did not have helicopters till well after WW2.

Note: The Shadowy Sheep tranquil flies today (redesignated VMA-214) as section of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Hover in help of Marine Expeditionary Forces. They are presently equipped with AV-8B Night Attack Harriers (VSTOL/Jump-Jets) . Their last major deployment was to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Major “Pappy” Boyington (Robert Conrad) commanded the Dismal Sheep Squadron during World War II in the Pacific and fought the war his hold contrivance taking a team of misfits and turning them into a stellar flying fighting unit. While the TV series about Boyington had runt to do with the exact heroes that fought in World War II, it made for absorbing TV in the 70’s.

There are the expected analog artifacts visible particularly during the sequences spicy stock footage (which got broken-down quite a bit during the series) . Also, some of the footage shot for the pilot and early episodes were recycled to carve costs where possible and, again, these bits of film betray the age of the series worthy more so than the episodes shot for each individual episode. Universal does a nice job with the recount there’s the expected amount of grain for a vintage series. The flesh tones are solid although a bit on the warm side (but that’s the device I remember the series when I watched it originally and even in syndication) . Color is obliging throughout and the image is generally quite inviting although there are bits where the images are a bit soft. Audio is presented in the unique mono without any embellishments. The mono sound is a bit muddy at times but the dialog is distinct throughout most of the episodes. Compare the dirty footage from the pilot episode (granted it’s an traditional videotape of the series pilot) to the digitally cleaned up footage here and you’ll perceive that Universal has done a handsome decent job of cleaning up the indicate (even the stock footage looks better than I expected in many cases) . Color matching is off during some of the stock footage but that was the case with the modern series.

A 1976 interview from “The Today Present” featuring Boyington and Robert Conrad is the only extras included here. It’s a lively peer into the past and it’s also fun to hear Boyington reminisce about his squad and behold his reaction to the footage from the pilot episode. The videotape this is drawn from is in blooming bad shape with a blurry image and indistinct colors. There’s also an interview from 1959 featuring Boyington after the release of his book. Curiously, the 1976 segment is presented before the 1959 segment. Together the interviews rush about 8 minutes and the latter segment was filmed in shaded & white. Each episode has the “highlights” trailer that preceded each episode showing key dramatic scenes

No commentary tracks which is a pity. Given that James Whitmore Jr. went on to become a director, it would have been inviting to hear his seize on shooting the series. I never realized till great, remarkable later that John Larroquette was a member of the cast during its two season bustle. Larroquette could also have provided an enthralling commentary track as well. The movie composed has the same cast of actors playing the roles of characters we’ve approach to know and care for. Everything in the movie clicked and felt suitable from the storyline, the laughable situations and the blips that happen along the diagram. Watching the movie version of “Sex & The City” was like watching an extended version of one of the television episodes, letting us, the viewers, study where & what the characters are up to now.

The entire movie was well done. If you liked the television series, then you’ll like the movie too.

I’ve watched this twice now, the first time I didn’t like it as worthy and then I watched it again and it was very humorous, the girls have astronomical like for each other. The sex scenes are taseful and very enjoying.

Upon its release “That’s Entertainment!” became the biggest and brightest money maker of 1974…and it’s no wonder. For a slight over two hours one had the enchanted experience of being teleported to a world unbiased this side of over the rainbow. Here is a cornucopia of magical scenes and snippets from MGM’s most radiant musicals. Directed with adroit – if self congratulatory – wit and concision by Jack Haley Jr. (son of Oz’s Tin Man), “That’s Entertainment!” is the sort of blindingly keen extravaganza that reinforces MGM’s once galvanic mottos of “art for art’s sake” and “more stars than there are in heaven.” At its gala premiere Jack Haley Sr. was heard declaring, “This isn’t nostalgia. This is art.” Rightly so, by 1974 the MGM musical had been wearisome for some time and the studio itself was on the verge of a restructuring that would ultimately sever its holdings to garage sale region. But at least in this film such forgotten treasures were resurrected from oblivion to their rightful spot in film history. Variety gave “That’s Entertainment!” a fair review, trumpeting, “That while many may ponder the future of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, no one can command that it’s had one heck of a past!”

Naturally, MGM impartial had to have a sequel. Two years later “That’s Entertainment II” came out. But David Melnick’s follow up was decidedly a let down on several levels. First, it removed the star cameos that so poignantly buttressed the original’s vintage clips. Second, it presented the footage in a seemingly hap-hazard chronology. And finally, it interrupted the musical performances with a showcase from some of the studio’s non-musical performers in a string of disjointed word play that neither enhanced the memory of their new performances or the film experience that was to be had. Though not nearly as successful as its predecessor, “That’s Entertainment II” was nevertheless a box office titan.

In 1994 MGM once again revisited its vaults for “That’s Entertainment III” the final installment in the series. But by now the experience was vaguely beginning to resemble grave robbing. The novel film’s critical selling feature was that, in addition to showcasing another round of classic performances, it also dug deep into the coffers of outtakes for a series of deleted musical numbers which, until 1994, had either never or rarely been seen. Despite these innovations the final installment to the trilogy was the one most poorly received. It’s the novel that continues dazzle us all and it’s the modern that remains the cornerstone of this newly minted DVD box station.

Warner’s DVD transfers of all three “That’s Entertainment!” films is a welcomed delight. After years of viewing parts one and two with poorly mastered vintage clips, these newly minted discs appear to have been the benefactors of some digital restoration. Beginning with the new film, there is a choose lack of grain and grit on this transfer that is most becoming. Colors (during the Technicolor clips) are vibrant, rich and deep. B&W images are very crisp, nicely balanced, with an often radiant gray scale and excellent attention to magnificent details. There is only the slightest amount of edge enhancement for a report that is very composed. The audio has been remixed and remastered to stereo for all three films. Share II seems to suffer from slightly lower dissimilarity levels overall, but the same review for Fraction I applies. The most outstanding example of digital mastering comes in Section III – a marvelously vibrant array of clips remastered (as they were for the theatrical engagement) in high def that positively glows off the cloak. The audio is 5.1 surround and is remarkably aggressive throughout.

Extras include a bonus disc of musical outtakes and extras, audio only catalogue of songs and dances, the novel footage of the LA premiere with all of the weak time musical stars in attendance and a series of short subjects that collectively fabricate like a documentary on the series. There are also the unique theatrical trailers for each film to be had. In the immortal words of George Gershwin…”who could ask for anything more? ”

While this trilogy of MGM musical tribute films have been available on VHS as a boxed state, the sheer quantity of unforgettable musical highlights showcased execute them ‘naturals’ for DVD, with the format’s profitable ’search’ accessibility, and improved narrate and sound quality. III (1994) eschews the ’soft-focus’ arrive of it’s predecessors, adding a ‘behind-the-scenes’ examine at the demanding work of creating ‘classic’ routines, and an unflinching acknowledgement of the prejudices of the era, to the mix of musical highlights.

My only quibble is that the musical output of the other major Hollywood studios tends to be downplayed, particularly in THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!, implying that MGM had the ‘corner’ on the market. Certainly, the Warner collection of Busby Berkeley spectaculars of the 30s, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, and the Doris Day musicals, Fox, with Shirley Temple, Alice Faye, and Betty Grable, Columbia (Rita Hayworth), Paramount (Bing Crosby and Bob Hope), and, most significantly, RKO’s classic series of Astaire and Rogers vehicles, all deserve as distinguished recognition and credit for their input to the genre of ‘classic’ musicals. In terms of sheer ’star power’ and overall quality, however, MGM was unmatched.

Whether you grew up loving musicals, or were introduced to the genre through novel films like CHICAGO or MOULIN ROUGE!, this collection of highlights should be valuable viewing!

I am peturbed that Amazon would spotlight two dreadful reviews. This was an awesome movie that kept me watching it from beginning to waste. I haven’t read the book, but after watching that movie, I do intend to. It’s fabulous how uplifting this bewitching movie was. Diane Lane was supurb without coming across as trying too worthy. We never win to behold her husband “Tom” who screwed her over royally in the divorce, which I mediate was a obliging decision. The movie stays in the explain looking ahead to the future with a sense of hope and promise. Engage up this movie for an righteous movie night – even if you’re not a chick!

What starts out as an Italian “Money Pit” with all the attendant broken pipes, crumbling walls and incompetent handymen makes a turn for the better about a third of the diagram through: a more emotionally centered and revealing movie,”Under the Tuscan Sun.”

The luminescent Diane Lane stars as Frances, an smart, loving women with halt and committed friends who finds herself in a region that many people do: with a mate who has fallen out of savor, wants a divorce as well as possession of a considerable loved and painstakingly renovated house, this one in San Francisco. OK to obvious up some confusion about the latest incarnation of “The Muppet Movie” this edition is celebrating the fact that Kermit always a bit green around the gills is 50 years former. That said I’m completely unimpressed with this edition of a classic family movie. I’ll rep to the reasons why in fair a bit in the meantime here’s a recap of the position for those of you who have forgotten what its about.

Discovered by a large time agent (Dom DeLuise) playing his banjo among the reeds and lilly pads, Kermit (Jim Henson) moves to Hollywood for fame and fortune. Along the device he hooks up with Miss Piggy (Frank Oz), Fozzie Gain (Frank Oz) and other Muppets who are looking for their road to the gargantuan time. Kermit is pursued by Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) who wants to start a chain of lickety-split food frog leg restaurants. He hopes to accomplish Kermit his company mascot. Along the design Kermit and his friends meet a who’s who of Hollywood’s funniest comedians along the draw. Featuring a who’s who list of top notch celebrity talent including Mel Brooks, Madeline Kahnm Richard Pryor, Edgar Bergen, Steve Martin and others, “The Muppet Movie” provided the early template for family films that could also be adult suitable as well.

With lustrous intelligent colors “The Muppet Movie” looks solid in this DVD transfer but the film could have venerable a bit of restoration. Image clarity and sharpness are not what they could have been as well with an occasional softness that surprised me. Granted, this edition looks better than the Tri-Star release of four years ago but the film really needs to be carefully restored improving the overall image and sound quality. The 5.1 Dolby Digital mix presents dialogue with nice clarity but the music secure and fair about everything else in the movie’s soundtrack comes across sounding tightly compressed. Again, an overall disappointment even when compared to the previous edition of this movie from four years ago.

I would have understanding that a spacious movie would deserve mammoth extras. Instead, the best extra from the previous edition (Frawley’s test footage) is missing from this edition. Instead of that we procure an underwhelming five puny featurette about Kermit. It’s a ruin of money and spot on the DVD. We also obtain the usual assortment of Disney previews at the beginning although you can skip them. A trace to Disney–including a fat camouflage version of the same movie no longer counts as a special feature

About the only favorable thing about this DVD release are the chapters placed throughout the film. It makes navigating to a particular scene heavenly easy overall but that’s not saying considerable in an age where “The Wizard of Oz” gets a deluxe three DVD edition or even the new “War of the Worlds” a two disc edition. Honestly, it feels like Disney blew it here. I’m not obvious they knew what they wanted to attach on the disc and this smells suspiciously like a double dip down the line. Considering the deluxe treatment that Disney recently gave “The Muppet Demonstrate” on DVD, I’m really surprised at how shabbily they treated this classic film.

A classic that receives truly pedestrian treatment, I’d recommend waiting to stare if a deluxe edition of this film is coming out before buying. If you don’t have the very ample previous edition of this film on DVD and feel you must have it now by all means feel free to seize it up. I have the clear feeling you’ll be kicking yourself later however and suggest renting and then taking a wait and study attitude about buying this venerable “Special Edition”. Man talk about being green, watching the treatment this classic received on DVD made me sick to my stomach.

I treasure the Muppet Movie. Its nods to film noir and buddy films, the music by the astonishing Paul Williams, the celebrity cameos, the characters–especially Miss Piggy and Fozzie.

Now then, I always watched the Muppets very aware that the movies were working on both the child and adult level, and happily effect in the DVD anticipating my current muppet joke of all: when Kermit walks into a bar after having lost Piggy and says, sadly, “I’ll have a grasshopper, please.”

Great joke! Kids won’t know what a “grasshopper” is or that he is boozing over being stood up–they’ll unprejudiced tune out til the music!

So why did they crop it from the DVD?

Especially when they kept the visual that Kermit drank alllll the champagne after Piggy left, and Rowlf’s assertion that every night he has “a coupla beers.” This PC thing has gone too far. I inform it’s not enough to deduct a whole star–except it’s my all time fave muppet moment.

Oh well, fancy the movie. And like the DVD option of watching it in French, where they have to change Piggy’s trademark “Moi!” to “Me.”
